A Hilarious Look Back
CLICK TO WATCH IT HERE
Five years ago I was on tour in California and, to promote the tour, I made an appearance on live radio. KPIG is known for its live-in-studio interviews, and the hosts there are open to all kinds of music. I was thrilled they were interested in having me. Since the studio was small, I agreed to performing live on air on an 88-key weighted keyboard. The engineer worked hard...

Enjoying the journey
I snapped this photo on the way to the bank yesterday. I am thinking about all the times I ran that errand.
I remember being a little girl and holding my mother’s hand as we walked to the bank in Irvington, NJ. I was too shy to ask for a lollipop so I just hoped and prayed the bank teller would notice me and give me one.
Living in Manhattan, going to the bank usually meant a long wait on...

Autumn Leaves
When I was a little girl, my mother and I would take walks to collect the colorful autumn leaves that had fallen to the ground. I placed my carefully selected maple, elm, pear, oak and walnut leaves into a plastic bag. They were orange, yellow, crimson, red, green and gold. When we got home we’d find the biggest books in the house, usually the dictionary and a few encyclopedias and...

Anonymous asked: Robin, I am a big fan of classical music, and I listen to it a lot. It is relaxing. But I have found that when things look really bad, when I am down, discouraged, and depressed, I just automatically turn to your music. Sitting down quietly and just listening to your music provides not only relaxation, but it is actually therapy. It encourages me and lifts my spirits like nothing else. ...

Ha! They *almost* got me! (Fraud alert)
I received a large order from a store in Switzerland the other day. I was so happy! The order was for about 60 CDs and 60 songbooks. I carefully packed all the merchandise for their long journey and waited to hear back from the store as to which shipping company they would be using.
The store provided a credit card number and asked, as a favor, to please also charge an extra $350. on to the...

Imagining a Different Life
When I lived in Manhattan, and later Montclair, NJ, going to the bank was an errand that took some serious time. Long lines, or in the case of the suburbs, finding a place to park took up precious minutes I wished I could have saved in a jar. But here in rural PA going to the bank only leads to daydreams and wonder.
After two blocks, I am out of my neighborhood and driving past farmland and...

"I Want to Ride My Bicycle...I want to ride my...
…I want to ride my bicycle, I want to ride it where I like.”
Remember that song? It was catchy.
In my childhood I rode my bike everywhere: to the community pool, to Burger King, to the library, to the park. No helmet. Reckless, carefree, I crossed busy intersections and got to where I needed to go.
While living in Manhattan I rode on the city streets of New York City from audition...

Father's Day thoughts
Happy Father’s Day. Here’s a picture of me way back when with my Dad. We’re standing in front of my childhood home in Maplewood, NJ. I remember that purse. I loved it. I felt so grown up having a purse. I don’t think there was anything in it besides a packet of tissues and a few quarters.
My Dad taught me how to hit a baseball (ok, whiffle ball), sink a basket, ride a...

Off to the Mountain - and the Accidental CD Cover
I was invited back to the “Music on the Mountain” Festival at the Mohonk Mountain House (happening next week—-see mohonk.com for details).
Boy, do I love this place. It is exquisite, and is, in my opinion, everything a mountain resort should be. Hiking trails, gardens, nature walks, horse back riding, lectures, concerts, wonderful cuisine in both casual and elegant settings, a...

It was great to see you in Hamilton, Ohio after so many years! I am very pleased that you have acquired rights to your original CD's. As you know, I had my "Heal of the Hand" CD with me, which you autographed. Well, I put it in the CD player in the car on the way home and just let it run. It went through 5 complete cycles before I finally stopped it. And I...

Everything Old is New Again
The fate of the recordings I made in the 1990’s under the North Star Music label had been an unknown for the past few months, and that left me feeling unsettled. After twenty-five years, the label had closed its doors. I had no idea what would become of the albums I had made for the label. Several of them were already out of print, but what about the rights to the “masters”? I...

A Winter's Sonata →
I am just back from my show at the Fitton Center in Hamilton, Ohio. During intermission an audience member named Bill approached me at the CD table and mentioned that he had first heard my music on Pandora Radio. Surprised (and happy) to hear my arrangements of the music from the Korean drama, “A Winter’s Sonata”, he said he just had to come see the show with his friends, even...

Talking on the Phone while Playing Piano
This photo was taken of me at my sound check last week in Roscommon, MI. I was checking my messages. When I saw it, I was reminded of how I used to practice the piano while talking to my mom on the phone. That might seem strange to you—-a pianist talking on the phone while practicing, but I know some pianists who READ magazines while running scales and exercises.
I’ve been known to...

Thank-you for making your concerts available to such a wide geographic group. Anxious to hear and see...

Played in a building shaped like a piano tonight!
After my sound check today at Ball State University’s Pruis Hall, I sat outside in the Spring sunshine to take in the vibe of the college campus. The kids looked happy and carefree. It looked a lot like a page out of the scrapbook of my college days, except for the cell phones that were practically in every hand.
Pruis Hall was just down the road from the David Letterman Hall (turns out...

Sheet music to try (before you buy)
I miss the days of the neighborhood sheet music store. In my years at NYU, I spent countless hours in stores like Carl Fischer Music in Manhattan browsing sheet music sheets, Broadway scores, and giant “fake books”. Reading the music and “playing the music in my head” before buying was as natural as browsing through novels at Borders. It’s like that for most musicians...
Walk with Me
More than a decade ago, I composed and recorded a cello/piano duet called “Walk with Me”, a song I dedicated to my own mother on the CD “Mother: Songs Celebrating Mothers and Motherhood”. It was a surprise hit on the recording, and it was a joy to perform it in concert with cellist Catherine Bent. The song went on to accompany ballroom dancers on PBS television and provide...

New York, New York
It was great to be back in New York doing a show. I performed at the Public Theater’s “Joe’s Pub” , named after the late Joe Papp, a very talented producer/director, perhaps best-known for bringing A CHORUS LINE to life.
Friends from all parts of my life past and present gathered at Joe’s for the show. Thank you to everyone who came out to the show and for those who...

My favorite part...
Last week I posted on Facebook that my piano was being tuned. I was surprised at the number of comments that simple post received. Some people really hate the sound of a piano being tuned. Others commented they needed to call in their tuners; my post served as a reminder. A few others commented that they tuned their own pianos and was surprised I did not tune my own.
This little dialogue got me...

Imagine
The performing arts conference I attended this week took place close to Steinway Hall in NYC. I stopped in at Steinway while giving my interns a quick tour of midtown Manhattan.
At Steinway I found Betsy Hirsch, or rather, she found me, in one of the back rooms playing a beautiful B model Steinway. Betsy is Steinway’s top sales rep and it’s no wonder: she’s a great musician,...

Handmade: A Thank You.
I love handmade things. Sweaters. Jewelry. Photographs. Music. Paintings. Pictures. Cookies. Pottery. Glass. Quilts. Needlepoint. Collages. Painted furniture. Sculpture. Wooden bowls. Ceramics. Steinways.
I enjoy buying handmade things. The artist’s intention is to create something beautiful, desired. That energy fills my house and makes me happy.
A heartfelt thank you to all of you who...

You are such an inspiration to myself and my 7 years old daughter who's learning music and classical piano.
How would you suggest ways to keep motivating my daughter that the journey is most worthwhile?
What have been some of your strongest motivators to get to where you are today?
Thanking you,

Big Rock 5, Robin's finger 0
First off, don’t worry. This injury is much better now and happened back in October. I couldn’t write about it or talk about it with anyone except my nearest and dearest until now. It was just too upsetting.
So here’s what happened.
I was out in the garden, enjoying the October weather and colors of the season. I trimmed back spent blooms, divided and transplanted a few...

Vermont Night
In the 1980’s I went to Vermont as an acting student in David Mamet’s Vermont summer workshop. The Atlantic Theater Company grew out of these workshops and Vermont became our summer home. I fell in love with Vermont; its mountains and valleys, its maple syrup, antique stores, country roads, its crisp mornings.
By the end of the decade my Vermont summers were replaced with New York...
